You have to have a passion for people. This has to be the most important of all. There was a period in time when people “lost” communication. The organic way of connecting was lost when people started texting with their phones but then with an decreasing size of the planet with the help of globalization and more portals through the internet, communication has taken a much more personal and communicative manner through social media. With so many vehicles for communication, it enhances personal relationships through a smorgasbord of photos, videos, statuses, tweets that can connect you with people on a different set of levels.

Being a social media manager primarily is rooted in marketing. Being in a virtual world with needs that has to be satisfied quickly, you have to strategically think about communication with a purpose. You have your campaign and your target and social media is merely a means on how to get it through. This means that, other than how to fit a whole concept in 140 characters, you have to understand the concepts of SEO or content marketing as well. You learn to speak to the people with a formula that gets your marketing ideas across without seemingly invading them through their virtual space.

Social Media is constantly evolving and you have to be up to date with the latest buzz and at the same time possess the very basic tools like a passion for communication and connecting with people and even plain writing. And it has to be good writing. Nowadays, if you post something through social media, even of the idea is great and the marketing strategy is new and aggressive, you can be torn alive by the many criticisms on the quality of writing itself.

You have to be careful. One false move, once you become sloppy with your tweets or make your YouTube videos haphazardly, it can bite you immediately. There is no such thing as a “do over” with social marketing. Even if you delete a social media faux pax, somebody somewhere will have a copy it and it will live on forever.
